I rarely like writing reviews of mainstream Asian films, because I want to give independent Asian films more publicity than they usually receive, but at the same time, I find myself yearning to make my review list longer. I also feel that, just because a film is popular, it doesn’t necessarily mean the film isn’t worth a view. In an attempt to rid this opinion from my blog, I’ve decided to review a couple more well renowned Asian films in order to show that I am aware of Asian films coming to America which have had a little bit of an impact on cinema.

The first of these films that I will be talking about is Kung Fu Hustle, which is a comedy that comes from China staring the lovable Stephen Chow, who is best known for his comedic acts throughout Asian filmographies. Kung Fu Hustle is the story of a small apartment complex that serves as a home for many different people who are just trying to make it through the trials of life. A young man and his friend visit the small apartment for a hair appointment. The two soon find themselves trying to sneak their way out of paying the bill by pretending that they are a part of a notorious gang known as the “Axe Gang”. Unfortunately they find themselves biting off more than they can chew as the townspeople throw them out of their town. The men then call for backup. Once the gang arrives, they soon find out that a few members of the town are martial arts experts that are capable of defending themselves. After a long battle between these few masters, the Axe Gang finds itself retreating. At their base of operations, the Axe Gang begins to try and find other means of destroying this village since they have embarrassed the gang’s reputation.

Kung Fu Hustle is a hilarious film by the great director, actor, and writer Stephen Chow. I remember being introduced to this film in my Chinese language class. I immediately found myself laughing hysterically at all of the odd humor and jokes present throughout the film. Stephen Chow is a great director, and once again has proved that he is capable of producing a film that is worth watching as long as you realize that the film isn’t supposed to be taken seriously. Kung Fu Hustle is an instant classic that will most likely be a memorable film even to those who have little knowledge of Chinese films.
